The Vicar writes…

May has seen Rossendale basking in the sunshine! Spirits have been lifted and there have been some significant national events to celebrate, not least a small wedding! Things have been very busy in Newchurch in the sun too!

We are making good progress on our work in the churchyards at St Nicholas’ and at St Michael’s, Lumb. We have submitted a project enquiry to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to see how we might seek support, funding and community engagement in the restoration and repair of these beautiful areas. We’re very grateful to the local group, Valley Heritage for their help in this. In the short term we have erected safety fences around some memorials which have become unsafe and signs to inform passers-by. This will be a long and ongoing project, but we are hopeful that together we can protect the history of the community hidden in our churchyards and make them safe and beautiful spaces for the benefit of the whole community. If you’d like to be involved in the project, please do have a word with me.

We are very lucky to have such beautiful green spaces entrusted to us, with amazing plant and wildlife to care for and encourage. Although there are many challenges to be faced, working together we can seek to protect and safeguard our wonderful surrounding to the glory of God our creator and for the good of all his children.

Please do pray for this important area of work at St Nicholas’ and watch this space to see how it develops!

With my prayers and best wishes,

 Mother Penny
